Worldwide Day of Play was created by Nickelodeon and is a FREE event dedicated to turning off screens and heading outside to play. The event is free and open to the public.
What: Day of Play presented by PNC, embodies our mission of “Inspiring the love of learning through the power of play.” The whole day is FREE and designed to provide opportunities for kids and parents to play and learn together! This national initiative, marked by a whole day of activities, encourages children and families to turn off screens, set down electronic devices and go outside to play.
When: Saturday, September 28th from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.
Where: 101 E Beaufort St, Normal, IL 61761
Visuals: Uptown Normal will be transformed into a giant playground with more than 60 community organizations and businesses providing free play activities, Touch a Truck where kids (and grown-ups) get an up-close look at machinery and equipment, Kids Make-and-Sell offers youth the opportunity to sell handcrafted goods, and CDM staff will lead STEAM activities exploring Space and Chemistry along with the opportunity to build a Pushcart through ISU’s Center for Math, Science, and Technology.
Physical play is represented through the Bike Rodeo - now located on North St. and will have free helmets to distribute, interactive demonstrations and dance routines on the PNC Stage in the Mark R. Peterson Plaza, giant sand box, and new this year, the PNC Grow Up Great Mobile Learning Adventure (MLA)! The MLA includes interactive kiosks and the “When I Grow Up” station, where kids dress up as different professionals and have their picture superimposed on an appropriate background. In addition, parents can take home activity books and learning kits that demonstrate how to take everyday moments and turn them into learning opportunities.
Update: Museums for All celebrates first birthday
The Children’s Discovery Museum is dedicated to ensuring all children in the community can grow and learn through play. During last year’s Day of Play, the CDM launched a new initiative called Museums for All that offered significant reductions in admission and program fees for families in need. It is part of a national initiative through the Association of Children’s Museums and Institute of Museum and Library Services that encourages families of all backgrounds to regularly visit museums.
In its first year, 332 households signed up to participate in Museums for All, representing almost 2,000 individuals. Families that qualify for nutrition assistance and are in possession of an EBT card (LINK, SNAP, WiC) can become a CDM Museums for All annual passholder. To sign-up, families present their benefit card with a valid form of identification to receive their annual pass. With each CDM visit, families can present their pass for six $3 admissions to the Museum (children under 2 are free), discounts on education programming, and other benefits. Families must renew their annual pass to keep receiving benefits.
